It’s something out of science fiction. A shadowy figure with glowing red eyes and leathery skin lurking in the darkness just outside the light. And when the morning light chases away the shadows, bodies drained of blood are the tell-tale sign of its nocturnal hunt. As the world approached the 21st-century reports of this blood-drinking monster would flourish in news reports and internet message boards to create one of the most infamous cryptids of the modern age. But where did it come from? Was it simply a creature unknown to science, or the horrific result of government experimentation? With unique species of fish swimming beneath the surface, it’s certainly a place unique not just in Idaho, but in the world. And it certainly must have been a breathtaking site to a party of Mormon settlers who would arrive there in 1863.
